WAWONII Island

 

This larger island (about 1000 km2) is located southeast of Kendari and offers a variety of touristic sites and occasions to experience the natural lifestyle of the native people. It can be reached by speedboat within 1,5 hours.

 

 

The name "Wawonii" originates from the local dialect and is a combination of the words "wa wo" = upland and "nii" = coconuts.

 

Indeed, nearly the whole island-rise is covered with coconut palms!

 

Experience the original indonesian way of life on this island which so far has remained completely undiscovered by tourism. The majority of the very hospitable native islanders lives in villages at the coast in simple shacks and makes their life of fishing.

 

 

The so-called Bajau (seafarers) are excellent swimmers and divers. If you are interested, they will teach you in the art of fishing so you will reel your own dinner!

 

 Various kinds of tasty vegetables and fruits are part of the rich culinary selection this island offers.

Explore the still intact ecosystem of the mangrove forests with its unique stilt-root trees on a boat excursion.

 

 

Whereas signalling crabs are active during the whole day, you have good chances especially during the early morning hours to watch colorful exotic bird species.

Who prefers refreshment in sweet water should go on an extended walk to discover a wildromantic waterfall.

 

The water is originating from the inner jungle mountains and falls precipitates down a cascade of 60 meters!
